The new menu at The Bavarian features a German version of mac ‘n’ cheese

Eat Canberra

The Bavarian is a Bavarian-inspired diner and pub dishing up imported biers served in steins and big, delicious Bavarian meals suitable for individuals or to be shared. In Canberra you’ll find the family-friendly venues located at Westfield Belconnen and Westfield Woden.

They recently launched a new menu and with big screens, German bier, plenty of schnapps and all the schnitzels and German sausage, we think you might want to check it out.

We recommend their Käsespätzle – a traditional German egg pasta with a Gruyère and Swiss cheese sauce, röstzwiebeln (friend onion) and chives. This version gives the American mac ‘n’ cheese a run for its money…. If you’re not a fan of a big bowl of cheesy deliciousness we can’t be friends. Joking! There’s plenty more for you to choose from.

Their schnitty burger is made with a pretzel bun and they even have a plant-based schnitty for all the vegans out there. That’s right you can go to The Bavarian with your meat-loving mates and enjoy a plant-based schnitzel on a burger or with some sides. They also have gluten-free options for those who are asking, we can hear you.

Some of their other new dishes you might want to try are the brotzeitteller (a German Ploughmans lunch) and the bayerischer wurstsalat – a traditional German salad originating from Bavaria. The Bavarian version is made with pork lyoner, swiss cheese, pickled onions, gherkins, radish, chives, roast potatoes and mustard dressing.

Don’t worry, you can still get their famous pork knuckle.

Oh and if you want something sweet, order their doughnut pretzel with salted caramel sauce AND chocolate sauce #noregrets.

We’re fans of The Bavarian and here’s why:

  1. Their pork knuckle is deeeelish and the pork crackle is super crunchy every time we’ve ordered it.
  2. They have a unique German menu you won’t find anywhere else in Canberra.
  3. Their German bier is served in steins (500ml glasses).
  4. They have a yummy selection of schnapps and if you order one they’ll ring a bell just for you “Awwww!”.
  5. If you’re a sports fan, it’s a great spot to watch a few games on the big screens while sharing a feast and maybe even a beer tube (2-litre tube with beer or cider of your choice) with your mates.
  6. It’s a really good spot for groups because so many dishes are designed to share – order their platters and make it a feast! Some of the dishes are pretty heavy so the more people you dine with means the more dishes you can try. Sharing is caring!
