In November 2020, Canberra hosted the first series of Regional Development Australia ACT’s Food in the Capital sustainable food conference program. They’re running the second series of events on 18th May and there’s an opportunity for you to see food in action by attending a rural farming or a peri-urban tour that will showcase local producers in the Canberra region.
The conference will be held on Tuesday 18th May and the two food tours will be running on Wednesday 19th May.
The regional tour will take attendees to Three Mills Bakery and then to Wynlen House in Braidwood for a special tour of the urban farm.
Guests will then be treated to a wine tasting by Sarah McDougall from popular Lake George Winery. A delicious lunch featuring food from Garlicious Black Garlic, Mongarlowe Gourmet truffle products and Bees R Us honey will be served. Some of the business owners will also be there to talk about their products and their successful sustainable regional businesses.
“The tours are showcasing real and replicable food stories, with a strong emphasis on sustainability and social responsibility,” said Suzanne Gearing from Regional Development ACT.
The peri-urban tour will take guests to a local brewery, Majura Farm and Black Mountain Café where there will be a focus on training and local food sourcing, technology in agriculture and peri-urban farm success factors. There will also be a discussion about how large corporations are going local and sustainable with lunch at Ikea.
Regional Development ACT’s Chief Executive Officer, Michael Claessens says the Food in the Capital events focus on the critical role food production, consumption and new technology must play in helping Canberra become a fully sustainable city.
“Canberra is embracing the potential to become Australia’s food capital,” he said.
The prices for the tours start from $181.50 per person. Find out more and book your tickets: https://www.foodinthecapital.com.au/copy-of-food-farm-tours-event-one
