The Goodie Box Series: Five Brunch Faves

It goes without saying that something people have missed during the pandemic is going out for brunch. We are a generation who love to mix breakfast and lunch! And I’m right there with you all who have been mourning this salubrious sport. That’s why I’ve listed five faithful brunch kits and takeaway dishes that will bring you some kind of satisfaction until things go back to complete ‘normality’. Although restrictions are being lifted, some businesses are still offering takeaway so we say, make the most of the option while it’s available!

Three Mills Bakery –  5 Lancaster Pl, Canberra (Majura Park)

Brunch these days is not quite the same without some kind of carb from Three Mills Bakery. Whether it’s a fresh buttery croissant or a slice of perfect sourdough, most Canberrans will vouch that it’s just part of the ‘plate furniture’ these days. So we were thrilled to discover they offer a weekend ‘brunch box’ delivered straight to your doorstep! It includes granola, bake-at-home croissants, sourdough (of course), orange and raisin loaf and bake-at-home sausage rolls. They also have a range of bake-at-home options and baked goods if you don’t want the brunch box. They’ve recently released sour cherry danishes and wagyu and mustard sausage rolls…. Our Chief Foodie, Amelia, placed a second order from Three Mills Bakery that arrived today and includes both! Their salted rye chocolate cookies are amazing too.

Make sure you select delivery the day prior to your planned baking as the croissants are an overnight process. Free home delivery anywhere in Canberra, just jump on to their website to order.

Patissez – 21 Bougainville St, Manuka

“Pat-is-say”, in case you’re wondering how to pronounce it, has dominated the takeaway brunch scene during this time. Their Isolation Station is providing colourful plates of their most popular sweet and savoury menu items such as hotcakes, corn and zucchini fritters, pulled pork benedict, chilli fungi eggs and the epic breakfast platter for two. As well as their usual impressive baked goods, of course.

They currently offer a text-and-collect process, so get those fingers typing to 0402 808 191 and pick up from their shopfront in Manuka.

Sonoma – 1/21 Lonsdale St, Braddon

In normal times you’ll regularly find a line up out the door of Sonoma on Lonsdale St. You can order a range of their sourdough and bakes goods, like their croissants, muffins, galettes, sourdough baguette sandwiches, and most importantly, coffee!

Order online to arrange pick up from their Braddon store, or if you live within a 4km radius they will deliver to your door!

Penny University – 15 Kennedy St, Kingston

A faithful brunch spot amongst locals, Penny University in Kingston have not let the pandemic get in the way of providing their famous eats. You can taste their banoffee croissant french toast, green eggs and ham, spicy avo dish with charred corn and their faithful bacon and egg roll. Packaged up in perfect takeaway containers, you can bring it back home to enjoy in a cosy space or out somewhere in the sun. Penny has also developed their own range of pantry essentials for you to purchase so you can re-create their dishes at home. Salted caramel sauce for the french toast, chilli jam for the bacon and egg roll, and dukkah for the smashed avo can be purchased at their service window.

Check out their menu online. You can call and order ahead on (02) 6162 1500 to pick up or wait for your order in the sun while you gaze at their radical merch.

Fox and Bow – 4 Farrer Pl, Farrer

How does breakfast in bed sound? Fox and Bow have you covered with their brunch menu delivered straight to your door. Blueberry hotcakes, Spanish eggs, chai-spiced porridge and their tasty double bacon and egg sambo are awaiting your order. Add on some coffees and sweet treats like their ‘special pastry box’, which includes a daily special of four selected pastries baked that day.

Order online and choose the delivery or pick up option. You can drive-thru or you can go to the cafe to pick up.

As restrictions are quickly being lifted, the way cafes and restaurants are doing business is changing. Please check with each business to ensure they’re still offering the services mentioned as things are changing quickly.
