Kith and Nosh: Tasty eats in Braddon

In Braddon and hungry? It’s a good problem to have. And if you’re after a healthy option, chances are you’ve heard of Kith and Nosh (it means friends and Food). But what you may not realise is that they’re under new management. I recently sat down with new owners, Karan and Kanav, to try some of their favourite menu items and talk about the innovative new direction.

Don’t worry, they still have their famous Reuben sandwich!

On entering, the place has a bright feel and board games, so I like it already. They tell me that this is a passion project and their goal is to offer something for every type of diner. Got a group that includes vegans and burger-lovers, that’s cool, the new Kith and Nosh menu includes BOTH. It’s brimming with delicious eats, so nobody will be forced to eat a boring meal again!

First, a latte. I’m not a big coffee drinker – as some of you will have observed – but the lovely barista asks if I’d like to try one of their specialty options and, of course, I do. I pick beetroot. How do I explain it? As was noted initially, “You do have to like beetroot”. This caveat seems obvious but it’s important because the beetiness is not subtle. (NB: the same definitely applies for the matcha latte!) Velvety and earthy. Not too sweet. I’d actually order it again.

Vegetable based coffee aside, it was the food cavalcade that excited me! The guys suggest I try a few things… five, to be exact.

First the K+N Kickstart Bowl. This was described as ‘wholesome’ and ‘nourishing’ – and it was! Somehow like eating the entire contents of a fit foodie’s Instagram feed. Cauliflower rice, kale, buckwheat granola topped with pickled cabbage and ginger along with two perfectly poached eggs. I lean toward the carnivorous, generally, but may I say, this was a delight and I still think about it from time to time.

Then comes the coconut pancakes. A flourish of nuts and berries made for an eye-catching plate, one to make the gluten-free crowd jump with glee! Light and fluffy, the generous portion of pancakes worked beautifully with coconut whipped cream, honey and a blackberry drizzle. Just look at the photo, order it!

Next offering, the best of the best sellers – apparently they can barely make enough of the sweet potato rosti. The simplicity of an expertly poached egg is something to make a foodie’s heart sing but when it’s paired with caramelised sweet potato, smoked ham and a green herb oil, you might just start doing back flips. This dish lived up to the hype.

The second last dish to arrive was a little bit of burger action. And by little, I mean MAMMOTH. The Moroccan lamb burger, among its delicious qualities, is about as big as my head – yes, I have a freakishly large head! Tender lamb and haloumi was sandwiched between a good-quality bun with a pile of shoestring fries on the side. They had me there, the rest is easy.

By the time the final dish arrives I’m borderline needing a nap…. If you have a technique for saying no to roast duck, goat’s cheese and figs, please, comment below. A salad that was so simple, yet rich. So decadent, yet light. Quality ingredients shone through in this one.

Now don’t be thinking these burgers and chilli dogs (yep, you can get chilli dogs too) mean they’ve lost their clean eating focus at Kith and Nosh. You can get all sorts of tasty, healthy options including sous vide fennel and a fabulous paleo bread made in-house, as well as the first few dishes I tried. If gluten isn’t an issue, they also get fresh bread from Canberra-based Three Mills Bakery. You can get a great cup of coffee, turmeric latte or fresh juice.

Rumour has it there will be a bar section opening soon but you’ll have to stay tuned! And get this, they even accept BITCOIN! Check out Kith and Nosh for your next brunch because they really do have something to satisfy everyone.

Emma Bickley is an irrepressible foodie who divides her time between cooking, eating and a few other tasks that pale into insignificance by comparison. She tries to follow recipes but ultimately cooks by feel… and with an irresponsible amount of butter. Even her small children (AKA culinary protégés) already know that no one eats until a photograph has been taken. You can find her food pics on Instagram @photo_before_we_eat or find her blissfully wandering around the markets squeezing produce, talking with her hands, encouraging her husband to smell things (which he won’t) and trying to decipher foreign ingredient labels. Of recent, you can also find her writing and dining for Eat Canberra. And if you ask about the stain on her top, she’ll say it was delicious.
