Love biscuits and cookies? So do we! That’s why we’ve rounded up some of the best in Canberra so you can enjoy a sweet treat or two while supporting local businesses.
Do you call them a cookie, biscuit or bicky? For the purpose of this article we’re going to say they’re same same, but different. We’re not here to argue the differences; we’re here to tell you where you can find some of the best in Canberra.
Willow’s Biscuit House
The baked goods from Willow’s Biscuit House are divine. You might have seen Willow’s Biscuit House at markets in Canberra in the past but the only way to get your hands on them at the moment is via their website. Their online shop is restocked every Sunday so you can place your order online and your order will be delivered to you on Friday. But you have to be quick because they sell out fast! They have lots of options, including a range of luxurious melting moments like the Belgium chocolate and caramel or winter spice. A generous swirl of French vanilla buttercream is sandwiched between flavoured shortbread biscuits. They also have a millionaire’s shortbread, bake at home cookie trays, giant cookies and more! They are beautifully packaged so they would make a beautiful gift for yourself or someone special.
Check out their website or follow them on Instagram and Facebook so you can place an order when the website it restocked.
Alfajores from The Milonga
You haven’t lived until you’ve tried alfajores (al-fa-ho-res)! I have many memories of eating every alfajor I saw while travelling in South America. There are many variations but the classic version is two soft, delicate cookies held together with a thick layer of dulce de leche and then rolled in shredded coconut. The Milonga have a selection of Argentinian alfajores for you to choose from and they range from the classic version to alfajores coated in chocolate.
You can order them in packs of 6 from their website or find them popping up at markets and events in Canberra. Follow them on Instagram and Facebook to see where they’ll be next.
Harvest – 40 Marcus Clarke St, Canberra
The cookies from Harvest might look simple but they’re decadent and are best enjoyed fresh from their oven! They’re the perfect treat with your morning beverage of choice.
Patissez – 21 Bougainville St, ‘The Lawns’ Manuka, Griffith
Choc chip and Nutella or toasted macadamia, white choc chip and dulce de leche? Don’t force yourself to make such a tough decision, just get one of each! The cookies are another delicious creation from Patissez! Pop them in the microwave for 20 seconds to make them gooey and maybe share them with your bestie because they are seriously indulgent.
The Sicilian Biscuit Company
Specialising in Sicilian sweets, you can pick up a little taste of Italy from the Sicilian Biscuit Company at Pop Canberra (102/27 Lonsdale St,
Braddon), Ainslie IGA (9/11 Edgar St, Ainslie) or O’Connor IGA (3 Sargood St, O’Connor). Their assorted pasticcini are little bites of perfection! They’re also available to order for events with wholesale available too.
Find them on Instagram and Facebook or check out their website to enquire about an order.
Salted Rye Chocolate Cookies from Three Mills Bakery
Like many Canberrans, we love Three Mills Bakery and one of the few positives of COVID-19 is that Three Mills Bakery products can now be delivered straight to your door! Spend over $40 and you’ll also get free delivery if your address is in the ACT. I’ve enjoyed all of the products I’ve tried from Three Mills Bakery and their salted rye chocolate cookies are up there with some of the best. They’re also award-winning cookies! The cookies are big and slightly chewy and the combination of the rich chocolate, slight saltiness and touch of sourness from the rye flour just works perfectly together.
Visit their website to order them online.
La Baguette by R&M – ANU School of Art & Design Gallery, cnr Ellery Cres and Liversidge St, Canberra
The biscuits from La Baguette by R&M could be the most unique biscuits I’ve come across in Canberra. Many of the biscuits from La Baguette by R&M aren’t as sweet as the other cookies and biscuits in this article. This hidden gem has a selection of bread, pastries, tarts, hot dishes and more. Their selection of biscuits can change often and most of them are French or North African. From lunettes to cornes de gazelle and pistachio semolina biscuits, you need to try them if you want to taste biscuits from other countries! We can’t travel at the moment so it’s a great way to experience other cultures without leaving Canberra.
You can now order some of their products online and have them delivered! Find them on Instagram and Facebook.
The Hungry Brown Cow
Hey chocolate lovers, these handmade artisan brownies have your name on them! If you’ve been following Eat Canberra for a while you would have seen us post about these brownie cookies for a while. I was one of the first people to try them and I’ve been a fan ever since! They are seriously amazing. The flavours change weekly and you’ll have to make a trip to the Capital Region Farmers Market on Saturday on Southside Farmers Market on Sunday to get your hands on them. They occasionally pop up at other locations and events in Canberra, so you might want to contact Will (the owner and genius behind them) to find where you can find the herd at a location closest to you. Keep your eye out because Will is also opening a burger and brownie bar in Canberra…. The location is yet to be revealed but what I do know is that it’s going to be awesome!
Check out the website and find The Hungry Brown Cow on Instagram and Facebook.
