New cafe opens in Mawson

Kettle and Tin Cafe is the new kid on the block at the Mawson shops. It’s a sweet little cafe that offers an all-day menu featuring breakfast, brunch and lunch options.

The interior has a light and airy feel. It hits those on-trend industrial notes with exposed beams, cage lights and hanging plants. It’s also much brighter than you might expect with plenty of white and some pastel tones. The beautiful black and white animal mural, painted by a local artist, is nice touch.

I ordered the French toast and smashed avocado – both essential points on any self-respecting brunch menu.

The first to arrive was the smashed avo. Presentation made it look very healthy with a pile of various shades of green, contrasted by a swoosh of beetroot dip. Now, we all know how important that egg consistency is. I’m happy to say, they nailed it. Firm on the outside but definitely a cascade of warm, gooey yolk once pierced.

My French toast came out shortly after, looking all pretty with a muddle of fruits and an appealing scoop of ice cream on top. The bread itself was fairly simple – most likely a brioche of some sort – and they had layered three pieces before dunking in egg and frying.

This resulted in a nice texture that was a bit crisp on the outside but with that satisfying ‘squidginess’ (it’s a word, ok?) inside. Can confirm there were no soggy bread bits and plenty of maple syrup.

While it may be foodie sacrilege, I am actually not a connoisseur of coffee but Joanna, the owner, assures me that they get fantastic beans from Locale of Melbourne. While I was there I saw a steady stream of contented caffeinators so, I assume, it’s a nice brew. I also saw a few mums with prams as it’s a spacious layout that allows for little people quite comfortably.

There’s ample seating available so I could imagine coming here with some friends or, equally, sitting in a corner and getting some work done.

Kettle and Tin Cafe is a great addition to Southside dining options. So if you’re in Mawson, you might want to check it out.

About the author:

Emma Bickley is an irrepressible foodie who divides her time between cooking, eating and a few other tasks that pale into insignificance by comparison. She tries to follow recipes but ultimately cooks by feel… and with an irresponsible amount of butter. Even her small children (AKA culinary protégés) already know that no one eats until a photograph has been taken. You can find her food pics on Instagram @photo_before_we_eat or find her blissfully wandering around the markets squeezing produce, talking with her hands, encouraging her husband to smell things (which he won’t) and trying to decipher foreign ingredient labels. Of recent, you can also find her writing and dining for Eat Canberra. And if you ask about the stain on her top, she’ll say it was delicious.
