Canberra’s best chicken wings

There’s a dedicated day for everything these days – burger day, chocolate day, wine and cheese day and today is International Chicken Wing Day. We’re not complaining, a day to celebrate some our favourite foods is a welcome excuse to treat yourself. Whether you like your wings fried, super spicy, buffalo, honey-glazed or BBQ, you’ll be impressed with Canberra’s strong wing game.

I compiled a chicken wing list 3 years ago and I thought it was time for an updated list. So for the love of wings, I’ve found where you can get some of the best chicken wings in Canberra from the Southside to Northside, including 50 cent wings.

Fricken – 10 Lonsdale St, Braddon

This popular chicken joint on Lonsdale St started as a food truck and quickly became a Canberra favourite. Fricken have a range of fried chicken packs, burgers and sides. They also have gluten free fried chicken available and specials like their $12 crispy lunch box, 50 cents wings on Wednesdays from 5pm and more. Their CMG box is a must try if you love crispy chicken with mashed potato and gravy. They also dish up chicken and waffles and there’s a range of vegan options for the non-chicken eaters among us.

Visit Bootleg to get a little taste of a cocktail jazz bar with prohibition-era speakeasy vibes. Visit on a Friday night for live jazz or head in for karaoke and trivia during the week. Visit on Mondays and get 50 cent buffalo wings from 4pm. You can choose from mild, medium or hot buffalo wings, sweet and spicy or house BBQ. If you want something more than wings you can order a plate of their Nashville fried chicken, a burger or a charcuterie platter.

Mookie – 4A/21 Genge St, Canberra OR 13B Anketell Street, South Point Mall, Tuggeranong

If you can handle the heat try Mookie’s LA-style hot wings. Choose your spice level starting from gringo, mamacita and loco. Go for the loco wings if you’re feeling a little crazy and you want to feel the burn. You can get three or six and they’re served with The Bronx hand cut pickles. Try their Mookie Sakura (nori rice bun) burger for something different or go with the classic wagyu if you want to keep it simple. Make sure you get the futaba seasoning on your chips or gems, and if you need more chicken in your life try their Harajuku chicken bites with yum yum sauce. Wash it all down with a sake jelly shot or a shake and leave room for one of their concretes if you have a sweet tooth.
